Nuggets è una corposa quanto importante raccolta di un momento di transizione della musica rock d'oltreoceano, un passaggio che va dalla british invasion di Beatles e Rolling Stones alla psichedelia (passaggio di cui furono in parte protagonisti gli stessi Beatles). Sulle orme dei due celeberrimi gruppi inglesi nacquero in America numerosissimi gruppi che tentarono di duplicarne il successo copiandone gli stilemi musicali e scimmiottandone l'abbigliamento. Caratteristica di questi gruppi era, oltre la giovane età (spesso), un aproccio totalmente casareccio e non-professionale alla musica che li portava a creare canzoni semplici (spesso ripetitive) e allo stesso tempo immediatamente fruibili dai loro altrettanto giovani ascoltatori. Questo tipo di musica e di atteggiamento venne definito "punk-rock" - nulla a che vedere stilisticamente con il movimento nato in Inghilterra nel '77, anche se coloro che fecero esplodere questo secondo fenomeno avevano tra i loro ascolti principali la prima versione di questa raccolta. Ma questo "punk-rock" non fu una semplice riproposizione della musica proveniente dalla terra di Albione: l'approccio rudimentale da una parte e la frequentazione con stili musicali tipicamente americani come il blues e il rock'n' roll portarono questi gruppi ad essere qualcosa di diverso. Nell'insieme tutte queste band costituirono un momento importante nella storia della musica moderna americana e mondiale e testimoniarono l'urgenza dei giovani di allora di un modo nuovo di fare e intedere la musica (che si accompagnò anche a una urgenza più sociale e politica, diversa, ma non estranea alla prima). Come in tutti i momenti di questo tipo pochi sono i gruppi che riuscirono a pubblicare almeno un album e ancora meno sono quelli che passarono indenni da questa sbornia musicale. Non per questo si può però leggitimanente dimenticarsi di questo pezzo di rock che rischiava di finire completamente dimenticato se non fosse stato per raccolte come quella qui recensita.
